Kitty Bytes (a.k.a. Neelix Bytes)

This page is dedicated to our 12 year old cat Neelix. If you are not a cat lover, this may not be of interest to you, after all I am not a lover of football and would not want to read a blog about footie! So if cat talk bores you –

Neelix joined our household on August Bank Holiday Monday in 1997. It was a very wet day, raining heavily (quite normal Bank Holiday weather for the UK!). Eric, my husband was walking along the street and heard this pitiful whining coming from under a taxi, the taxi pulled out and out dropped a thoroughly wet, dirty kitten.

Now at this point I should tell you that up until then I had always vowed never to have a cat. I was a ‘dog’ person. Our dear King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Prince had died in 1993 and I had vowed then never to have another pet. Losing a pet is just so painful. However, I’m just a big softy at heart, and when Eric phoned to say he had found a kitten, all I could hear in the background were these pitiful cries so of course I said yes!

A few days later we took the freshly cleaned, somewhat quieter feline to the vet for a thorough check over, vaccinations, flea treatment and sex and age check! The vet said we had a male cat around 3 months old. Then of course we had to give him a name. Being Star Trek fans we named him Neelix, often shortened to Nees or Nee Nees!

As we live on the first floor of a small appartment block, it was evident that Neelix would become an indoor cat. However, he does get to wander along the balcony, and also investigate the bin room roof.

In the summer he goes out on the front lawn – on a long lead for safety. As soon as his harness and lead are put on – he knows where he’s going and trots off down the staircase! It is said that cat’s have nine lives. Neelix has certainly used up a few of his! Over the years he has managed to jump from the second floor balcony and damage his hips, and more recently, he found a window left open and fell 15 ft onto the front lawn. He was very badly shocked, had internal injuries and spent 48 hours with the vet, but thankfully there was no major damage. The vet called it ‘High Rise Syndrome’, and had apparently treated two more cats with High Rise Syndrome that week. At this point I must stress the importance of taking out good Pet Insurance for your cat or dog – vet bills are expensive, and Pet Insurance is an absolute must.

We had always been really careful about not leaving windows open, but that day obviously forgot. We have now fixed cat proof mesh to all our windows, so now we get fresh air throughout the flat, without worrying about Neelix taking a tumble out of the window again. If you have similar problems check out FLAT CATS, they have just what you need!

Neelix has become part of our family and we would not be without him. He gets thoroughly spoilt of course , and behaves more like a dog than a cat at times, and enjoys getting his teeth into a nice bone!
